Last week we introduced the 6S (sometimes called 5S) process. One thing that I forgot to mention is that it is important to have a designated Red Tag area and the tags to attach to the items, before performing a 6S.

The red tag has important information on it like the date, who tagged the item, item name, location that it came from, category, and reason for the red tag.

The other side of the tag is to determine the action of the item.

I suggested that you could practice 6S in your own home, so the red tag area may be your garage.

As you are sorting things from your closet you will toss some items in the garbage, and others will be boxed up to donate or have a garage sale.

It is important that there needs to be a time limit for this red-tag area, typically a week to 1 month.

It does not benefit us to move things we do not need to another location that is still not needed.

It is meant to have the items visible and accessible to determine a disposition and take action asap.

So start your spring cleaning today and make sure you have a red tag area so you can deal with the items once and for all.
