What is a Fishbone diagram and what does it have to do with problem solving?

A fishbone diagram is one of my favorite tools to use for root cause analysis.

A fishbone diagram is a chart that resembles a fish skeleton, with a main spine and branches (bones) drawn at a slant off of the spine.

The diagram here shows a simple personal application to make it relatable.

Each spine reflects a focus area or a problem.

We then come up with potential solutions to the problem.

This is effective because many of the "solutions" are actually symptoms and not the solution.

By illustrating it on a diagram we can have better visibility and ask more questions to get to the true root cause. Other framework ideas are:

- Who, what, when, where, why

- Management, man, method, machine, measurement, material

- System, process, forms, people, policies, place

Do you have a problem that you are trying to solve? Try a fishbone diagram.
