When working on a continuous improvement project we try to keep these 7 lean principles in mind:
Optimize the whole not just a part of the process. By keeping the whole value stream in mind, we have better visibility to solve a problem rather than move a problem.
Eliminate waste by focusing on the 7 types of waste (more on this in a couple of weeks) we ensure that we are focusing on the process and not the person.
Build quality in by looking for ways to reduce or eliminate variation by standardizing or mistake-proofing a process.
Deliver fast since most customers require this nowadays and is considered "value added" as in they are willing to pay more to get it. By eliminating waste and defects, allows us to get the product to the customer faster.
Create knowledge by creating the ideal process, documenting it and making it the standard. We can then train others to duplicate the process within that standard.
Defer commitment ensures that decisions are made when they make sense, typically at the last moment based on the most relevant, and up-to-date information.
Respecting people sets us up to hire and retain the best people and create a culture where the best ideas are heard.
