What on earth is a DMAIC?!


DMAIC is an acronym that represents the 5 phases that make up a process. These phases help us simplify the process and establish data to measure the improvement and often align with KPIs.


1. Define the problem

2. Measure the performance

3. Analyze the process and get to the root cause of any variations or defects.

4. Improve the process by eliminating waste and defects.

5. Control variations by creating standard work.


Improving a process can be overwhelming but if we stay within the DMAIC framework it helps us scope the project so it is more manageable. You can see from the diagram that it is a wheel, indicating that when we are finished with the control phase we return to the define phase again so we are always improving.
