Are you doing tasks that should belong to someone else?

Are you struggling with how to know when and how to delegate?

The first step is to know your key responsibilities and goals.

Then within that framework, determine if you have taken on activities that don't support these objectives. If so. delegate.

Instead of taking over tasks because others aren't doing their jobs or not performing to your standards, delegate the tasks to the individuals who are responsible for them.

Clarify others' roles and responsibilities, communicate your expectations, train and coach them to learn how to do the tasks if needed, and hold them accountable for those tasks.

Tips for Delegating:

- Recognize signs that your delegating skills need sharpening—for example, your plate is always overflowing but your co-worker or spouse, or children are available and able to take on a task.

- When delegating, be very clear on what you want to be done and when.
If you build a sense of shared responsibility for your overall goals. your peers or family will be more interested in taking on new projects.

- Avoid dumping only tedious or difficult jobs on your employee or family—delegate tasks that spark interest and enjoyment as well.

- Develop trust in less-skilled employees or family members by delegating small, very structured assignments first. Then provide the support they need to increase their competence.

- Whenever possible, delegate an entire project, not just a small piece. You'll increase the peer’s or family members' motivation and commitment.

- Monitor progress and provide feedback.

- Maintain open lines of communication: "Let me know if you run into problems."
